Ask us if you have questions, and we can help you choose the perfect vintage kantha.

Kantha, meaning "patched cloth" or "rags" (derived from Sanskrit kontha), is a centuries-old Indian embroidery technique from Bengal (India/Bangladesh) that reflects a rich cultural heritage, involving stacking old saris or fabrics held together by a straight running stitch.

It is a sustainable, ancient textile art form commonly used to create lightweight quilts, clothing, and home accessories. Vintage Kanthas are versatile pieces that can enhance any interior design, adding a touch of whimsical charm or cultural richness to your space and making them perfect for both decorative and functional use.

At Yummy Linen, we specialise in authentic Kantha products of all kinds, carefully sourced to ensure genuine craftsmanship, and yes, there are many to choose from.

Suzani fabric originated in the area found along the Silk Road. This region connected China, Turkey, Europe, and the Middle East. The Central Asian region is known for producing textiles that reflect the nomadic cultures of Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.

You can identify fine stitched Kantha by the small, tightly stitched straight stitches, often in alternating colours. The number of cotton layers and stitching density influence the textile's weight and intended use, such as heavier pieces for rugs or lighter ones for baby blankets, helping you select the right piece for your needs.

As seen in the accompanying images, hand-done Suzani stitch features in the coloured borders that run around and through the textile in featured straight lines. One image shows a high-grade, artisan-stitched Vintage Kantha and Suzani Stitched quilt, with one side featuring a colourful design and the other side, white, showcasing the suzani-stitched side. As a fine-grade Vintage Kantha with Suzani stitching, this textile will have more value than a simple running-stitch piece.

The three accompanying images show Rugged Suzani and very old, fine-stitched Kantha throws, some dating back to the 1930's. As these pieces are fully biodegradable, their age, humidity, and storage have begun to decompose the outer layers, creating the most beautiful texture and a flannel-like feel. Proper care, including gentle cleaning and appropriate storage, will help preserve their beauty and longevity for years to come.

Perfect for babies as wraps, blankets, and clothing, rugged Kantha will mesmerise you with its unique beauty and buttery softness.

It is rare to find any Rugged Kanthas without patches, as they were patched when needed to keep them usable. We believe that continuing the art of patching allows you to create your own story and preserve this meaningful tradition.

Rugged Kantha - light-weight designs will look like an artwork - very textural and pretty. The fabric will be soft and comforting. Sizes vary.

Suzani Rugged Kantha - you will see the addition of feature stitching. See it here.

Also available are heavy-grade rugged Kantha, which are stunningly beautiful and can be used as blankets, throws, tablecloths, picnic rugs, or made into carry-all bags, totes, coats and whatever your heart desires.

Our next story will focus on Suzani stitching as the hero feature. See it here.
